A Massive Roster of Towers
Bloons TD 4 revolutionized the series by introducing several amazing upgrades, massive graphical improvements, and, crucially, a wider array of towers. The game features returning classics alongside fresh faces. You'll start off with the humble Dart Monkey, an affordable short-range unit perfect for the early waves. From there, you can place Tack Shooters at tight corners, Sniper Monkeys that boast infinite range, and Boomerang Throwers whose curved attacks can wipe out dozens of standard red and blue bloons at once.
However, basic darts won't be enough as the waves progress. To melt through densely packed crowds, you will need the heavy artillery provided by the Bomb Tower or the freezing power of the Ice Monkey. And when the late game arrives, there is simply no substitution for the incredibly powerful (and incredibly expensive) Super Monkey. Balancing your budget between placing cheap early-game towers and saving up for these high-tier heavy hitters is the core of the experience.
The Upgrade Path System
Tower placement is only half the battle. BTD4 gives you access to an extensive dual-path upgrade system for every single monkey and structure in the game. Each tower has a left path and a right path containing unique enhancements. For instance, the Dart Monkey's left path eventually culminates in the devastating Spike-o-pult, which launches heavy, piercing balls that roll down straight lines, while the right path increases attack speed and gives them the ability to pop leads. These choices matter profoundly when planning your defense in our classic games section.
Special Bloons and Hazards
The Bloons don't go down without a fight. By round 20, the game begins introducing special bloon variants that will decimate an unprepared defense. You will have to deal with Lead Bloons, which are immune to sharp objects and require explosions, magic, or heat. Then come the Camo Bloons, invisible units that can only be seen by specific towers like the Ninja Monkey or via an upgraded Monkey Village. Finally, you will face the dreaded MOAB (Massive Ornary Air Blimp), a gigantic blue zeppelin that tanks thousands of hits before bursting into a swarm of Ceramic bloons.
Managing Your Economy
One of the brilliant additions in BTD4 was the expansion of the Banana Farm. Tower defense isn't just about firepower—it’s about money. The Banana Farm acts as your primary source of compounding income. Instead of relying solely on the cash you earn from popping bloons, you can plant farms to generate extra cash every round. Investing heavily in Banana Farms early in the game makes the later, more difficult waves much easier to handle, as you will have the raw capital required to spam fully-upgraded Super Monkeys.
